Resistance – Subverting – Surviving: MACUNAÍMA is “the story of a Brazilian who is devoured by Brazil.” (Joaquim Pedro de Andrade) The titular Macunaíma arrives in the world as an adult with black skin. Years later, his skin turns white due to a magical spring and he moves from the jungle to the city. MACUNAÍMA is based on Mario de Andrade’s 1928 novel of the same name, a key work of Brazilian modernism. With grotesque opulence and a wild blend of jungle and civilization, he creates a dense system of relationships that maps out all the different influences that make up modern Brazil.
